i’m gonna be upfront. i do not know how long it has been since my friend mahmoud (@ma7moudgaza2) has eaten.

he messaged me four days ago—the 24th of november—and said his family has had no bread in the last two days.

i want to believe he’s eaten since then. but as far as i know, he has not.

i am a minor with no bank account to donate from. every day that rips me apart, because i know him, his family, and everyone else in gaza starves while i sit warm and full in my bed.

when i am sick it is medicated quickly. when i am in pain i have the blessing of being able to take ibuprofen. when i am hungry there is food in the pantry. when i am tired i sleep and when i am sad i have my family and friends to comfort me.

palestinians do not have this. to my understanding gaza is now in a state of unrestricted capitalism. people are starving and have no money to pay for food. people are freezing and have no money to pay for blankets. the rain comes down and there is no money to buy tents without holes in them.

a lot of us cannot imagine the lives of the people who are in gaza right now, be they farmers or journalists or students like my friend mahmoud. we have never lived with a bomb over our head and a knife at our throat.

but everyone has been hungry before, even if most of us have never endured a famine. have some pity, please.

Peeled, chopped, and seasoned 10 pounds of sweet potatoes tonight.

Gonna have to peel, chop, and mash 10 pounds of regular potatoes tomorrow.

But while I was up to my elbows in taters I had some thoughts.

Sweet potatoes are a relailtively new addition to our family thanksgiving table. Nobody really likes the overly sugared, marshmallow-topped mashed sweet potatoes most people do. But i started doing spiced roasted sweet potatoes a few years ago as something to help counter the richness of every other dish and they've been in demand since.

And now I have to ask...
